From a series of 10 studies of this volcanic spur in Edinburgh’s Holyrood Park, visible from the artist’s studio, painted between 2016-19.

‘The path leading up and around the Crags is known as ‘The Radical Road’ and in the late 18th century, contemporary with Robert Burns, the reformer Thomas Muir and his ‘Friends of the People’ group – radicals influenced by Thomas Paine’s The Rights of Man – that was their secret meeting-place. It was a revolutionary moment in European history, inspired by the American revolution, and many Scots were aware of that fact.’ – Alexander Moffat in Arts of Resistance: Poets, Portraits and Landscapes of Modern Scotland
