This interview in the artist’s studio shortly before his eightieth birthday gave Sandy Moffat an opportunity to look back over a lifetime’s dedication to painting. The conversation was wide-ranging, taking in the effects on his own practice of teaching others, the relationship between portraitist and sitter, his distinctive use of colour, his identity as a Scottish artist and the responsibility of the artist. It was not entirely retrospective. The impression I was left with was of the artist entering his eighty-first year looking to the future, making plans for paintings still to be realised.
