Out of the Woods was created for an exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy, titled ‘In Perspextive’. This unique exhibition presented a selection of works from Royal Academicians and STAR Tapestry artists. As the title suggests, the exhibition focused on works in perspex boxes, allowing gallery visitors to get up close to the artworks. 50 artists were invited to participate, including Marion Smith RSA. Her two pieces, this and Into the Woods contain her casts of primitive plants, so that the perspex cover also seems to take on a protective function. Gingko leaves, delicate horsetail, ferns that all date back some 200 million years.
The artist’s recurring inspiration from the natural world as well as her work’s characteristic historical richness and finest craftsmanship are all in abundance here.
