About the Artist

b. 1943     Scottish

One of Europe’s foremost 20th and 21st century portraitists.

Currently Chair of the Essential School of Painting

2018                Awarded Honorary Doctorate Glasgow School of Art, where he encouraged a new generation of Scottish figurative painters including Peter Howson, Ken Currie and Steven Campbell. He was Head of Painting and Printmaking here 1992-2005 as well as Chair of the School of Fine Art 1998-2000.

2006                Awarded OBE for services to the arts

2004                Elected to Royal Scottish Academy
